Mr. Howlin
asked the
Minister for Health
if, for each health board, psychiatric hospital and unit, he will outline the number of in-patients by age group as of 31st December, 1991; if, at 31st December, 1982, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1990 and 1991, he will give details of (a) the number of patients in each of these hospitals and units (b) the number of psychiatric nurses employed in each health board and (c) the total attendance at psychiatric out-patient clinics for each health board.
The information sought by the Deputy is set out in the tables below. A detailed breakdown by age group of the number of in-patients in each health board psychiatric hospital and unit at 31 March 1991 is contained in The Irish Psychiatric Hospitals and Units Census 1991, carried out by the Health Research Board. Table 1 presents this data. The total number of in-patients at 31 December, 1982, 1984, 1986, 1988 and 1990 for each psychiatric hospital and unit is provided in Table 2. Table 3 details the wholetime equivalent number of psychiatric nurses employed in each health board at 31 December, 1986, 1988, 1990 and 1991. These figures are not available for earlier years. The number of total attendances at psychiatric clinics in each health board for the years 1984, 1986, 1988 and 1990 is shown in Table 4. These figures are not available for earlier years. I will communicate with the Deputy as soon as the 1991 figures are available.
