Vol. 423 No. 1

Written Answers. - Free Travel Scheme.

Dermot Fitzpatrick

Ceist:

419 Dr. Fitzpatrick asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of (a) people that would be brought into the free travel net and (b) the cost to the State if the age for the free travel was lowered from 66 years to 60 years; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is estimated that there are currently some 160,000 persons aged 60 to 65 resident in the State, and the cost of extending the Free Travel Scheme to them would be approximately £10 million a year.
