Grant assistance for coast protection works is allocated by my Department for approved projects submitted by local authorities.
Primary responsibility for coast protection rests with maritime local authorities, some of which have undertaken protection work themselves. Owners of private property, have of course, a role in protecting their own interests. The policy of my Department is to facilitate the implementation of permanent schemes, where warranted, to prevent progressive erosion by the sea. To this end, and with a view to drawing up a national programme of coast protection works for the coming years, my Department during 1991 requested each coastal local authority to submit priorities for coast protection schemes.
Cork County Council have not yet submitted their proposals for coast protection works.
