Vol. 423 No. 4

Written Answers. - Illegal Gaming Machines.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

103 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Justice if it has been brought to his attention that, according to various newspaper reports, credit poker machines are used in many instances as illegal gaming machines; and, if so, if he will consider prohibiting the use of such machines in Ireland as is already the case in the North of Ireland and in Great Britain.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the Garda monitor amusement halls and video games centres to ensure as far as possible that illegal gaming does not take place, and I am assured by them that all allegations of such gaming, which are brought to their attention are investigated thoroughly.

If the Deputy is aware that breaches of the law are taking place in particular establishments, he should report the matter to the Garda authorities.

I could not undertake to indicate, by way of reply to a Parliamentary Question, what specific legislative proposals I might have in a particular area. Any proposals I may have in relation to the subject matter of this question will be announced in the ordinary way.
