Written Answers. - Bankruptcy Cases.

Ceist:

59 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to the very long delays in the settlement of certain cases in the Bankruptcy Court, and especially in the case of a person (details supplied) where claims for about two and a half million pounds have been in the court for the last ten years without sign of any resolution; and if he proposes legislative changes to eliminate delays in bankruptcy settlements.

I have had inquiries made and I am satisfied that there is no undue delay in the settlement of cases in the office of the Official Assignee in Bankruptcy.

As the Deputy will be aware, the particular case mentioned is a most complex one with a large number of creditors. This case has received and is continuing to receive the active attention of the Office of the Official Assignee.

I am satisfied that the Bankruptcy Act, 1988, which consolidated legislation in this area, is being operated effectively.
