Vol. 424 No. 1

Written Answers. - Appointment of Judges.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

96 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the number of temporary and permanent judges that have been appointed in the past 24 months; if our courts have a full complement of judges; if he is considering any new appointments, particularly for the Dublin area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The full complement of judges are serving in each court at present as the two District Court vacancies are being filled today.

The number of permanent Judges appointed since October 1990 is set out hereunder:

Supreme Court, 2

High Court, 5

Circuit Court, 4

District Court, 9.

One temporary District Court Judge was appointed since October 1990. He has since been appointed a permanent District Court Judge.

Judicial appointments are made by the President on the advice of the Government. The number of judges required in the courts is kept under review, and any proposals for legislation which would increase the authorised complement of the Bench of any court will be announced in the usual way.
