Vol. 424 No. 5

Written Answers. - Orthodontic Treatment.

Theresa Ahearn

Ceist:

129 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Health the numbers awaiting orthodontic treatment in South Tipperary; the numbers awaiting assessment; if he has any proposals to reduce the waiting list; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The position regarding the provision of orthodontic treatment in the South Tipperary area is as follows: currently in treatment, 514; awaiting treatment, 162; awaiting assessment, 219. A consultant orthodontist took up duty with the South-Eastern Health Board in September 1992 and will carry-out the remaining assessments in the near future.

Apart from her own direct clinical involvement, a primary task of the consultant orthodontist is to organise and coordinate orthodontic training to specialist and sub-specialist levels for health board dental staff. This will result in further improved levels of service.
