Vol. 424 No. 5

Written Answers. - European Sea Links.

Peter Barry

Ceist:

66 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for the Marine if he will clarify the Government's policy regarding sea links with Europe; if Cork port was considered in any upgrading following on the implementation of the Single European Act, 1986; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Ireland's sea links with Europe are being upgraded through a comprehensive programme of investment in port facilities. Cork has been one of the largest beneficiaries of that investment programme. A total of £41.27 million has been invested in Government programmes to develop Cork Harbour.

The following EC co-financed developments have been undertaken at Cork Harbour since 1986:— (a) The construction of the deepwater berth at Ringaskiddy which was completed in 1986. This project was the final component of the Cork harbour development plan which had a total cost of £28 million; (b) The provision of a bulk crane for the Ringaskiddy deepwater berth. This project was completed in 1990 at a cost of approximately £2.5 million; (c) The provision of a crane and back-up area for Lo-Lo container handling at the Tivoli terminal. This project is substantially complete and will cost approximately £4 million; (d) The further extension of the deepwater berth at Ringaskiddy. This project is substantially complete and will cost approximately £5 million; (e) The renovation of the deepwater quay at Cobh. This project will be completed in 1993 at a cost of approximately £0.7 million; (f) The provision of a mooring dolphin at the ferry berth in Ringaskiddy. This project will be completed in 1993 at a cost of approximately £1.07 million.
In addition, the Government are pursuing with the European Commission supports for investment in Ro-Ro and Lo-Lo modes.
