Vol. 424 No. 9

Written Answers. - Racing Authority.

Ivan Yates

Ceist:

115 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will give details of the proposed new racing authority; and the date it is proposed to establish the interim authority in this regard.

Ivan Yates

Ceist:

116 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the steps, if any, he is taking to ensure that ordinary race-goers are represented on the Racing Authority of Ireland, in view of the fact that revenue from the on course betting levy is the principal source of income of the Racing Board and the need to attract more people to race meetings.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 115 and 116 together.

I would refer the Deputy to the statement which I made at a press conference on 1 October, 1992. The text of the statement is available in a press release which was issued at the time.

I hope that the interim committee, to help in planning for the legislation and new structure, will be set up shortly.

At the press conference I made it clear that it was my intention to ensure that the ordinary racegoer and punter are represented on the new Racing Authority.
