Vol. 424 No. 9

Written Answers. - Cuba Blockade.

Jim O'Keeffe

Ceist:

26 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs his views on the blockade of Cuba which still continues 30 years since it was originally imposed by the United States.

The embargo on all political, economic and commercial relations between the United States and Cuba was instituted by the United States in early 1962. It has not precluded other countries from developing trade and commercial links with Cuba. Neither has it prevented the provision of humanitarian aid to Cuba.

A return to normal relations between the United States and Cuba is a bilateral matter between the two Governments concerned. Following the great changes that have taken place in international relations in the past few years I would hope that the conditions could be created which would bring to an end the Cold War animosities everywhere in the world.
