Vol. 424 No. 10

Ceisteanna — Questions. Written Answers. - Drogheda (Louth) National Monument.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

42 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Finance if there are any plans to carry out works on St. Lawrence Gate, Drogheda, a National Monument which is a major tourist attraction; if he will indicate the efforts which have been made in conjunction with Drogheda Corporation to set up a joint programme of work with financial support from his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Office of Public Works has no plans for major works at St. Lawrence's Gate. As guardian of this national monument, the office is authorised only to fund and carry out conservation works. These works are undertaken periodically. A restoration of the monument would be a matter for the owners, Drogheda Corporation, subject to the consent of the Office of Public Works. I am aware that restoration is an objective in the Corporation's draft development plan. I would be happy to see that objective achieved.
