Vol. 425 No. 7

Written Answers. - IDA Grants.

Pat Rabbitte

Ceist:

201 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the total grants approved by the IDA in 1991 and 1992; the amount actually paid in grants in these years; the reason the IDA has ceased to publish the amounts approved in their annual reports and only publishes the amounts paid; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The information sought by the Deputy in relation to total grants paid by the IDA in 1991 is contained in that organisation's Annual Report and Accounts which were laid before the Houses of the Oireachtas on 25 June 1992. The 1992 Annual Report and Accounts will not be available until mid 1993. I am informed by the IDA, however, that the respective amounts are £121.9 million and £107.3 million.

I am informed by the IDA that since 1990, they have reported on their activities on the basis of actual job creation, actual spending by industry in the Irish economy and the actual payment of grants to client companies. Grant approval figures are no longer published as they have tended to confuse the situation in relation to actual payments to companies and hence the actual cost of industrial projects. I am informed by the IDA, however, that the figures for 1991 and 1992 are £134 million and £145 million respectively.
