Appointment of Members of Government and Ministers of State.

I understand the Taoiseach wishes to make an announcement.

I beg leave to announce, for the information of the Dáil, (1) that, having informed the President that Dáil Éireann had approved on nomination of Deputies to be members of the Government, the President on 12 January 1993 appointed them accordingly; (2) that, on the same date I nominated Deputy Dick Spring to be Tánaiste; (3) that, on the same date I assigned the Departments of State to the members of the Government as follows:

Department of Foreign Affairs to Dick Spring.

Department of Finance to Bertie Ahern.

Department of Social Welfare to Michael Woods.

Department of Justice to Maire Geoghegan-Quinn.

Department of Industry and Commerce to Ruairí Quinn.

Department of the Environment to Michael Smith.

Department of Defence and the Department of the Marine to David Andrews.

Department of Agriculture and Food to Joe Walsh.

Department of Tourism, Transport and Communications to Charlie McCreevy.

Department of Energy to Brian Cowen.

Department of Labour to Mervyn Taylor.

Department of the Gaeltacht to Michael D. Higgins.

Department of Health to Brendan Howlin.

and

Department of Education to Niamh Bhreathnach.

Following the alteration of names of Departments, the following Departments are now assigned to the following members of the Government:

Department of Enterprise and Employment to Ruairí Quinn.

Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry to Joe Walsh.

Department of Tourism and Trade to Charlie McCreevy.

Department of Transport, Energy and Communications to Brian Cowen.

Department of Equality and Law Reform to Mervyn Taylor.

Department of Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht to Michael D. Higgins.

(4) that, on 12 January 1993 the President appointed Harold A. Whelehan, Senior Counsel, as Attorney General;

(5) that, on the same date the Government appointed Deputy Noel Dempsey to be the Minister of State at the Department of the Taoiseach with special responsibility as Government Chief Whip, and at the Department of Defence;

(6) that, on 14 January 1993 the Government appointed the following Deputies to be Ministers of State with the responsibilities as indicated:

Minister of State at the Department of Finance with special responsibility for the Office of Public Works;

Mary O'Rourke

Minister of State at the Department of Industry and Commerce with special responsibility for Labour Affairs in the new Department of Enterprise and Employment;

Minister of State at the Department of Industry and Commerce with special responsibility for Commerce and Technology in the new Department of Enterprise and Employment;

Pat the Cope Gallagher

Minister of State at the Department of the Gaeltacht with special responsibility for the Gaeltacht in the new Department of Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht;

Minister of State at the Departments of the Taoiseach, Finance and Energy with special responsibility for Energy in the new Department of Transport, Energy and Communications;
