Vol. 425 No. 7

Written Answers. - Access to Police Interview Notes.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

89 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs his views on the fact that the solicitor for a prisoner has been refused access to interview notes for ESDA testing, on the grounds that the notes are missing and that RUC members involved in this case are now under investigation arising from a case (details supplied); and if he will make representations to the British authorities on the matter.

I am aware of the background to this case, about which my predecessor was in touch with the Deputy on 13 November 1992. The Deputy will be aware that the British authorities have conveyed their regrets over the issue and, in addition, have instituted new arrangements for the custody of police interview notes, including electronic dating of interview booklets and the safe storage of interview records. I shall continue to keep this matter under review within the framework of the Anglo-Irish Conference.
