Vol. 426 No. 1

Written Answers. - Teachers' Qualification.

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

218 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Education if she will re-examine the stipulation whereby people must have Irish to obtain a teaching post particularly when the individual is born and/or educated outside of the country.

It is departmental policy that all teachers should be suitably qualified in Irish. This position has been upheld as reasonable by the Court of Justice of the European Communities. There are no plans to remove the requirement at present. However, my Department is examining the question of granting provisional recognition for a period of time to persons who do not hold the required qualifications in Irish to enable them to acquire same.
