Vol. 426 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Communications Equipment.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

76 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice the proposals, if any, she has to improve, update and upgrade communications equipment used by the Gardaí; if her attention has been drawn to the necessity for such provision; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The gardaí are supplied with a wide range of modern communications equipment which is upgraded on an ongoing basis. Their precise requirements are kept under constant review, having regard to the availability of new technology as well as changing operational needs as it would be inappropriate to limit their equipment to their requirements and the technology of any particular time. A current example of a development which may give rise to change is the review of the Garda information technology requirements which is being carried out at present by outside consultants. The findings of the consultants, which should be available within the next few months, will be evaluated with a view to determining what implications they might have for Garda communications.
