Vol. 426 No. 5

Written Answers. - Finance for Pilot Project.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

118 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the amount of finance which has been allocated to a Programme for Economic and Social Progress pilot project (details supplied) to tackle long term unemployment in the Coolock/Darndale area of Dublin; and if any employment has been created as a result.

I understand that the partnership company established under the Programme for Economic and Social Progress in the Coolock/Darndale area was paid £109,600 by the Department of the Taoiseach in respect of the company's administrative and running expenses over the period 1991 and 1992.

The role of the partnership companies is to assist the long term unemployed in their areas to secure employment, placement on a training or education programme or set up their own enterprises. In addition the companies promote economic projects and initiatives likely to generate jobs at a local level. In 1992, the partnership company in the Coolock/ Darndale area dealt with 720 unemployed people. The number of unemployed people placed on education courses was 390; 57 unemployed people were placed on training courses; 37 unemployed people were placed on employment programmes; and 13 unemployed people took up self employment.
