Vol. 426 No. 5

Written Answers. - Dublin Road Works.

Seán Ryan

Ceist:

183 Mr. S. Ryan asked the Minister for the Environment the position on the application from Dublin County Council for funding for the dualling of the N1 road from the Coachman's Inn to Swords, County Dublin; if, in view of the recent deaths on this dangerous section of road, he will approve the necessary funding for the provision of a pedestrian crossing at Nevinstown, Swords, County Dublin, as this is part of the overall scheme.

Work was completed in 1990 on dualling the section of the N1 from the airport roundabout to the Cloghran roundabout. Detailed proposals for the extension of the dualling as far as Pinnock Hill, (incorporating pedestrian facilities) have yet to be received from Dublin County Council. I will be prepared to consider the allocation of road grants for this work when the necessary proposals are received from the county council.

Ceist:

184 Mr. S. Ryan asked the Minister for the Environment the position on the application from Dublin County Council for finance for the provision of public lighting on the N1 road from Balrothery to Balbriggan, County Dublin; and if in view of the number of fatal accidents at this dangerous section of road, he will sanction the necessary finance as a matter of urgency.

Dublin County Council have been informed that the provision of a high standard of delineation at this location would be a more appropriate solution than the provision of traffic route lighting. The council's proposals for delineation have been approved and consideration will be given to the provision of funding for the work when the road grants for 1993 are being determined.

I should point out the proposed Balbriggan By-Pass will considerably reduce the amount of traffic using this section of the existing N1 route. Subject to the statutory procedures involved, the By-Pass is scheduled to commence in 1994 and to be completed in 1996.
