Vol. 426 No. 5

Written Answers. - Keel Lake (Mayo) Ownership.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

218 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if the waters of Keel Lake, Achill, County Mayo were vested in the Land Commission; the responsibilities, if any, that such ownership now imposes on his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It would appear from an initial examination of the records that Keel Lough was acquired by the Congested Districts Board (CDB) as part of the Achill Mission estate. If so, ownership of Keel Lough would have passed to the Land Commission on the dissolution of the CDB in 1923 and, therefore, my Department would have the normal responsibilities at common law and by statute, including the Land Acts, concomitant with ownership. However further investigation into the ownership is necessary and I will be in touch with the Deputy in due course.
