Vol. 426 No. 5

Written Answers. - Remedial Teaching Facilities.

Michael Creed

Ceist:

346 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education if an application has been received from a school (details supplied) in County Cork for a remedial teacher; and the current position in this matter.

I have received an application for a remedial teacher from the school in question.

I am currently examining the scope for deployment of additional teaching resources to children with special educational needs.

The question of remedial teaching posts will form a key element in this consideration.

In this connection the Programme for a Partnership Government provides for the recruitment of 500 remedial teachers by September 1966.

Pádraic McCormack

Ceist:

347 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Education when a resource centre for children with specific learning difficulties will be provided for Galway city and county; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I have no plans at present to provide such a centre in Galway.

The educational needs of children with specific learning disability are generally met within the ordinary school system, employing a variety of approaches to suit individual needs, with the help, where appropriate, of remedial teachers.

There are 35 remedial teacher posts in Galway city and county and 50 per cent of pupils in the county are attending schools which have the services of a remedial teacher.

I am currently examining the scope for the deployment of additional teaching resources to children with special educational needs and the appointment of additional remedial teachers will form a key element in this consideration.

In this connection the Programme for a Partnership Government provides for the recruitment of 500 remedial teachers by September 1966.

The needs of children with a more acute specific learning disability are met by three special schools, two in Dublin and one in Cork.
