Vol. 426 No. 5

Written Answers. - Election Polling Day.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

40 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for the Environment if he will introduce legislation to require that all elections in this country will henceforth be held on Sundays; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The polling day at each election and referendum is appointed by order of the Minister in accordance with, and subject to the constraints specified in, the particular electoral code. It is a matter for decision on each occasion which day of the week should be appointed. I consider that this flexibility should be retained and the introduction of legislation on the lines indicated is not proposed.
