Vol. 427 No. 2

Written Answers. - Army Supplies.

John Bruton

Ceist:

68 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Finance if his Department has transferred an order for supplies for the Army from a company (details supplied) in County Dublin to a Birmingham-based company with the resultant loss of jobs in Dublin; and if so, the reason this decision has been taken.

Nora Owen

Ceist:

69 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Finance if his Department has transferred an order for supplies for the Army from a company (details supplied) in County Dublin to a Birmingham-based company with the resultant loss of jobs in Dublin; and if so, the reason this decision has been taken.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 68 and 69 together.

No order for supplies for the Army was transferred from the company named in County Dublin to a Birmingham based company.

Following a tender competition, a contract for the supply of 18,000 Army badges was placed with a Birmingham firm on 5 February 1993 as their bid was the most economically advantageous having regard to price, quality and delivery. This contract was subsequently determined void when the firm advised that they were no longer in a position to meet the terms of their bid.

To meet the immediate requirements of the Army, a contract has now been placed with the Dublin company for 6,000 badges. The balance of the requirements will be the subject of a fresh competition later.

All contracts handled by the Government Supplies Agency of the Office of Public Works are dealt with in accordance with Government contract procedures laid down by the Minister for Finance which include the relevant EC directives on procurement.
