Vol. 427 No. 6
133 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if he intends to introduce legislation to allow for career interruption leave; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
I have no plans to introduce legislation to provide for career interruption leave.
I consider that the provision of such leave is a matter which is appropriate for negotiation between employers and employees or their representatives.
I should mention, however, that the Second Commission on the Status of Women has made a number of recommendations on measures to increase flexibility in working life, including a recommendation that career breaks should be available to all employees on the basis of negotiation and agreement with the employer and trade union, where appropriate. The Deputy will be aware that the Minister of State at my Department, Deputy Mary O'Rourke, has set up a working group to advise and assist in implementing those recommendations which come within the area of labour affairs. The working party's considerations will include the Commission's recommendation on career breaks.
