Vol. 427 No. 6

Written Answers. - Local Authority House Improvements.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

151 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment the plans, if any, he has to introduce a grants scheme to assist tenant purchasers of local authority houses to provide bathrooms in those tenant-purchase dwellings which did not have a bathroom facility at the time of purchase.

There are a number of ways in which particular categories of persons (including tenant-purchasers) can be assisted in the provision of bathroom facilities: house improvement loans of up to £3,000 unsecured, and £10,000 secured from local authorities; the scheme whereby local authorities can have improvement works (including the installation of bathroom facilities) carried out to the existing accommodation of approved housing applicants as an alternative to rehousing by the local authority; the disabled person's grants scheme and the Task Force on Special Housing Aid for the Elderly which provides assistance to elderly persons living alone in unfit or insanitary accommodation.

I intend to keep under review the need for additional measures in this regard.
