Vol. 427 No. 6

Written Answers. - Westmeath Road Improvements.

Paul McGrath

Ceist:

172 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for the Environment the plans, if any, he has for the upgrading of the N6 road from Kinnegad to Moate in County Westmeath.

Preliminary route selection work is under way for the improvement of 22 km stretch of the N6 between Kinnegad and Rochfordbridge. The question of improving other sections of the route will be considered in the context of the determination of the annual road grant allocation.

Paul McGrath

Ceist:

173 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for the Environment if he will give a report on the proposed by-pass for Kinnegad, County Westmeath.

The proposed scheme would involve the construction of a 5.5 km motorway by-pass of Kinnegad from the N4 near Clonard to the N6 west of Kinnegad with a dual carriageway link to the N4 north of Kinnegad. A preliminary estimate of the cost of the scheme is £17.5 million.

Preliminary work relating to route selection, site investigation and road design is under way and will be continuing in the current year. Subject to completion by the local authority of the necessary preliminary procedures and the outcome of the relevant statutory procedures, work on the project could commence in late 1994 and be completed during 1996.
