Vol. 427 No. 6

Written Answers. - Cloonagh (Sligo) Pier.

Edward Nealon

Ceist:

201 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for the Marine if his attention has been drawn to the facts that major structural damage has been caused to Cloonagh Pier, Maugherow, County Sligo by the storms in January 1993, that there is a danger of the pier disintegrating unless repair and reconstruction work is carried out, that severe damage will be done to the livelihoods of local fishermen if the pier were unusable; and if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that the Cloonagh Pier is of major historical interest because of its former use by the Inismurray Islanders and also because of its association with the poems of Eva Gore-Booth; and if in view of all these considerations, he will ensure that immediate action is taken to start the necessary works to protect the pier and safeguard it against future storms.

Cloonagh pier is owned by Sligo County Council who are responsible for its maintenance and repair.

The position in relation to this pier is that no provision was made for improvement works at Cloonagh under the Fishery Harbour Development Programme 1989-1993. However, a new programme is currently being drawn up for the 1994-1997 period and it is possible that this pier will be considered for improvement works in that context.

Pending finalisation of this programme and clarification of its funding it is difficult for me at this stage to say whether Cloonagh Pier will be included for improvement works under the new Development Plan.
