55 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Taoiseach the number of full-time farmers for each of the years, 1970, 1980, 1990 and 1993.

56 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Taoiseach the number of full-time farmers in the age categories 20-30 years, 30-40 years, 40-50 years, 50-60 years, 60-70 years, and 70 years plus.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 55 and 56 together.

The information requested by the Deputy is not available for the years indicated.

The Census of Population, conducted every five years, and the annual Labour Force Survey, however, provide comparable information for the years 1971, 1981 and 1991 on the numbers of persons who indicated "Farmer" as their principal occupation in these inquiries. These figures are provided in the following table.

The age breakdown requested by the Deputy is given in the following table which shows a distribution by age grouping of the estimated numbers of persons whose principal occupation was described as "Farmer" in the 1991 Labour Force Suvey.
