Vol. 427 No. 6

Written Answers. - Telecom Affair.

Ceist:

111 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for Justice when the fraud squad commenced its investigation in relation to the Telecom affair; the progress, if any, which has been made to date in this investigation; when it is envisaged that the fraud squad's enquiries will be concluded; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

It is not the practice for the Minister for Justice to report to the House about the progress of specific Garda investigations and I do not propose to depart from that practice as Garda efforts might be adversely affected were I to do so. All I propose to say in this case is that I am informed by the Garda authorities that the matter was referred to them in November 1992 and that an investigation, now in progress, will be concluded as soon as possible.
