194 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if he will restore the scheme of grants for improvement of bog access and development, operated formerly by Bord na Móna; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
The Private Bog Development Grants Scheme which was introduced under the Turf Development Act, 1981 was terminated in 1987. The scheme achieved its main purpose which was to stimulate the development of private peat resources as a source of fuel. This is demonstrated by the increase in production from this source to a level of 1.5 million tonnes per annum.
There are no plans to restore the scheme.
