Vol. 427 No. 8

Written Answers. - School Attendance.

Pat Rabbitte

Ceist:

244 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Education where responsibility lies for the enforcement of the School Attendance Act, 1926, in Tallaght, Dublin 24; if she is reviewing this Act; when legislation to update the Act, including provision for school attendance officers in the greater Dublin area will be introduced; and if she will make a statement on the School Attendance Act and its enforcement, especially in the light of the proposal in the Green Paper to raise the school leaving age.

The responsibility for the enforcement of the School Attendance Act in the Tallaght area rests with the Garda Síochána.

The Green Paper proposes a review of the working of the school Attendance Act including an examination of the roles and responsibilities of the various agencies involved. This review is now under way and consultation will take place with all the interested parties.

Any decisions on school attendance legislation, or on enforcement of that legislation, must await the outcome of this review.
