Vol. 427 No. 8

Written Answers. - Fining of Pupils.

Pat Rabbitte

Ceist:

86 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the practice introduced by some second level schools of fining pupils a sizeable amount for alleged misdemeanours, which fine must be paid before the pupil can re-enter the school; her views on this practice; the steps, if any, she will take to end it; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The records of my Department and inquiries made have not succeeded in eliciting any evidence of such a practice. I would be happy to investigate any instance of the practice which the Deputy might wish to bring to my attention.

It may be that pupils are asked to pay for any malicious damage caused to school property which, I am sure the Deputy will agree, is not unreasonable.
