Vol. 428 No. 5

Written Answers. - Cattle Slaughtering.

Pat Upton

Ceist:

162 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the number of animals slaughtered in this country since 1 July 1992; and the number of these animals which were examined by a veterinary practitioner in accordance with the present legal requirements.

The number of animals slaughtered at export approved meat plants and subjected to veterinary examination for the period for 1 July 1992 to 28 February 1993 is as follows: Cattle, 1,127,764; Sheep, 2,339,754; Pigs, 1,803,587.

Day to day operation of abattoirs supplying the domestic market only is under the direct control and supervisions of the local authorities, which are required to arrange for ante and post morterm examinations on all animals slaughtered. Statistics of animals slaughtered and veterinary examinations carried out at domestic abattoirs are not available in my Department. They may be available from individual local authorities.
