Vol. 428 No. 5

Written Answers. - Blanchardstown (Dublin) Regional Technical College.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

240 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education the plans, if any, she has for the building of a Regional Technical College in the Blanchardstown area of Dublin in view of the fact that the rapidly rising population of that area is now over 50,000.

As I indicated in the Dáil on 23 March 1993, I believe that it is time now for an overview of demands and needs in higher education to include the university sector, the technical and technological colleges and the range of course provision currently in place throughout the country.

The purpose of this review would be to examine the needs of different regions, socio-economic groups and the overall needs of society with a view to developing an integrated plan in the context of third-level education generally. The review will consider, inter alia, submissions from various parts of the country for the location of higher education institutions in their area, bearing in mind the issues which I raised in the Dáil.
