Vol. 428 No. 5

Written Answers. - Educational Videos in Schools.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

246 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education the views, if any, she has on the use of video by schools under the aegis of her Department for educational promotion and briefing material; if she supports the view that such schools should not have to pay television licence fees; the procedures necessary to achieve this; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I believe that teaching at all levels of the education system should keep abreast of the potential created by new technologies for the process of teaching and learning.

The question of exemption or otherwise from the payment of a Television Licence is a matter for the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht. In this connection. I would refer the Deputy to the reply to Parliamentary Question No. 419 on 23 March 1993 given by the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht.

My Department provides grants towards the running costs of schools and these funds may, of course, be used for the purchase of a TV licence.
