Vol. 428 No. 5

Written Answers. - Cork City Courtroom Space.

Máirín Quill

Ceist:

44 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Justice if, in relation to the provision of additional courtroom space in Cork city and the recent acquisition of a building to meet that objective, she will give details of when that building is likely to be ready to be fitted out and equipped; and if she will give a time frame within which the renovation, restoration and fitting out of the building to bring it into order for its new function will be completed.

The position regarding the provision of additional courtroom space in Cork City is that a number of premises are being considered. The Office of Public Works have carried out a feasibility study on one of these premises which appeared initially to have the best potential. The results of that study are at present being considered by my Department and accordingly, no decision has yet been taken on the acquisition of a particular building.

The time frame for the renovation, restoration and fitting out of additional courtroom space in Cork City will depend on when a suitable building is acquired and the amount of work needed to adapt it for Court purposes. In these circumstances it is not possible for me to say when the new accommodation will be available.
