Vol. 428 No. 5

Written Answers. - Courthouse Accommodation.

Mary Harney

Ceist:

104 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Justice the total amount spent in each of the years from 1988 to 1992 on courthouse accommodation, including the provision of new courthouses and the refurbishment of existing courthouses; the proposed expenditure under this heading in 1993; and if she will give details of the projects in respect of which finance will be provided.

The precise information sought in the question is not readily available because the expenditure incurred by local authorities in maintaining courthouses is not recorded centrally. However, I can inform the House that the amounts provided for the Courts Vote, consequent on the Government decision of 13 March 1990 that the costs of providing and maintaining courthouses should be provided from the Exchequer, are as follows: 1991, £3.2 million (revised to £1 million); 1992, £1.25 million; 1993 £1.25 million. The 1993 figure includes provision for two major courthouse refurbishment projects, Clonmel and Galway, and the provision of extra accommodation for Cork District Court as well as a number of smaller projects.
