Vol. 428 No. 5

Written Answers. - Protection of Workers.

Liz McManus

Ceist:

108 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if his attention has been drawn to an EC Directive governing the protection of workers who use wordprocessors and computers; and if he intends to comply with this Directive in relation to workers within Dáil Éireann both in Government Departments and those working for TDs.

The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations, 1993 (S.I. No. 44 of 1993), which came into force on 22 February, 1993, give effect to seven EC Directives including Council Directive 90/270/EEC on the minimum safety and health requirements for work which display screen equipment.

These Regulations impose obligations on all employers in regard to the use of such equipment. In accordance with the provisions of Directive 90/270/EEC these Regulations specify requirements which apply to the operation of display screen equipment in use prior to 31 December, 1992 and of equipment first brought into use after that date. From 31 December 1996 all display screen equipment will be required to comply fully with all of the requirements set out in the Directive.

The Government will fulfil its statutory obligations as an employer with regard to these Regulations.
