Vol. 429 No. 4

Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given to me under Standing Order 20 (3) (a) and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Sheehan — the details of the proposed new farm development scheme in view of the serious anomalies in the existing scheme; (2) Deputy Molloy — the reason the appointment of a caretaker in Scoil Chaitriona, Renmore, Galway has not been sanctioned even though there are over 900 pupils attending the school; (3) Deputy T. Ahearn — the increasingly serious overcrowding problem at the Christian Brothers High School, Clonmel, County Tipperary; (4) Deputy J. Higgins — the need for the Minister for Education to extend the higher education grants scheme to enable Irish students studying in third level colleges in Great Britain and in mainland EC countries to qualify for the maintenance element of higher education grants and the urgency of such a measure in the light of recent studies and reports in relation to the extreme difficulties being encountered by Irish students in maintaining themselves in these countries while studying; (5) Deputy J. O'Keeffe — the reason for the delay in the repair and improvement of the pier at Union Hall, County Cork; (6) Deputy S. Ryan — the imminent danger to hundreds of miles of coastline and the need to seek EC funding for a coastal protection and management programme as a matter of urgency; (7) Deputy J. Mitchell — the urgent need for funding to replace windows in certain Dublin inner city flat complexes (details supplied) and the position in relation to the reported £1 million pounds set aside for this purpose in this year's budget; (8) Deputy Mulvihill — the illegal encampment of a group of travellers at Carrigtwohill, County Cork and the resultant distress caused to local residents and industrialists; (9) Deputy McGrath — the public disquiet arising from alleged harassment, threats and attempted extortion of money from members of the public by a Garda in Athlone, County Westmeath; (10) Deputy Proinsias De Rossa — the hardship being caused for families in need by the continued application of circulars 14/92 and 18/92 regarding supplementary welfare payments; and the need for the withdrawal of these circulars; (11) Deputy Sargent — the latest report of an explosion at the Plutonium Separation Factory in the secret nuclear weapons complex in Tomsk-7; the levels of radiation which were released; and the risks which are being posed to the local population and the international community following this accident; (12) Deputy Allen — the allegation that payments were accepted from medical card holders at Tralee Hospital and the need for an investigation into these allegations; (13) Deputy Deenihan — whether the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry proposes to administer beef premium payments from a central office in Portlaoise and whether this move will lead to confusion and further hardship for the farming community in rural Ireland; (14) Deputy G. Mitchell — if the Minister for Finance will have arrangements made for the President's Bounty of £250 to be paid to a centenarian in Dublin 6 who has lived with her family in Ireland for many years but who has been denied the payment as she is not an Irish citizen.

I have selected for discussion the matters raised by Deputies Mulvihill, J. O'Keeffe and Molloy.

On a point of order, can I ask if there will be an Adjournment debate tomorrow?

There will be, Deputy.

I would ask in the interest of my 100-year-old constituent who has been denied the President's bounty that this matter could be considered tomorrow.

There are aspects of it which have to be considered by the Chair.
