I propose to take Questions Nos. 325 and 327 together.
Of the 122 ordinary primary schools in County Clare, 12 schools have the services of a remedial teacher on a full-time basis, while 20 schools have the services of a remedial teacher on a shared basis, 51 per cent of pupils in the county are attending schools which have the services of a remedial teacher.
Of the 90 primary schools in County Clare without the services of a remedial teacher, 46 schools have applied for such a post.
No remedial appointments were sanctioned in 1992.
As a first step towards the appointment of 500 remedial teachers under the Programme for a Partnership Government, I have decided that an additional 80 remedial teachers will be appointed from September 1993, to serve schools on an individual or shared basis.
These appointments will be made following the collection of data and information from schools by my Department's Primary Inspectorate. These posts will then be allocated on the basis of priority of need, as indicated by the information collected.
