Vol. 429 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ministerial Appointments.

Máirín Quill

Ceist:

13 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform if, in relation to appointments he has made since taking office, he will specify the number of women, travellers and disabled persons that have been so appointed; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Since taking office I have appointed three people to my personal staff, two of whom are men and one of whom is a woman. I have not appointed any traveller or disabled person.

The rest of the staff of the Department are civil servants who were transferred from other Departments or appointed in the normal way following a public competition.

The Minister said that he appointed three people, two of whom are men and one of whom is a woman. Will he now tell us the status of each — in other words, what jobs did the men get and what job did the woman get?

Of the men appointed, one is the programme manager and the other is a legal adviser and the woman is a personal adviser.

Will the Minister indicate how many of the three appointees were former Labour Party officials in his constituency?

That is an example of political as opposed to gender proofing.

That patriarchy of the Labour Party.
