A strike commenced at the company's Dublin plant on 28 March in a dispute over union recognition. A number of workers in the Dublin plant wish to be represented by SIPTU. This was the subject of a Labour Court hearing in May 1991. The court recommended that the company recognise SIPTU's right to negotiate on behalf of its members in the plant. The recommendation is not binding and management has indicated that it wishes to continue to negotiate solely with the works committee which represents the majority of the workforce.
In an effort to avert the strike a conciliation conference under the Labour Relations Commission was held on 24 March but no agreement was reached. The services of the Labour Relations Commission continue to be available to the parties.
