277 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Health the number of deaths related to cervical cancer in each of the years from 1980 to 1990 inclusive; and if he will initiate a comprehensive national screening programme to achieve a reduction in the number of such deaths.
The number of deaths related to cervical cancer in each of the years 1980 to 1990 is: 1980, 53; 1981, 61; 1982, 57; 1983, 57; 1984, 55; 1985, 70; 1986, 61; 1987, 65; 1988, 72; 1989, 68; 1990, 63. The Working Group on Cervical Screening has been reconvened in order to consider what further improvements can be made in this area. I expect that the group will report before the end of this year.
