Ceist:

153 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education the total number of children in County Kildare currently attending primary and second level schools in which adequate and fit classroom accommodation exists; the numbers, in each category, in respect of which extra facilities/improvements are required; the plans, if any, she has for dealing with the matter; the locations at which early attention is expected; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The information in the precise format requested by the Deputy is unavailable.

My Department operates a capital programme to provide suitable accommodation for teachers and pupils. Under this programme grants are made available for new buildings, extensions, repairs, improvements, temporary accommodation, furniture and equipment where the need is established.

The following is the position regarding school level schools in County Kildare: a major extension has recently commenced at Confey College, Leixlip; additional projects are currently being considered at the following second level schools in Kildare — CBS Naas, Maynooth post primary school, Athy vocational school, Holy Family secondary school, Newbridge, Newbridge College, Curragh vocational school and Celbridge.
The inclusion of these projects in the second level programme will continue to be considered in the context of available funds, and other commitments and priories.
The following is the position regarding primary schools in County Kildare: new schools are at present being built at Brownstown in the Curragh and Churchtown, Athy, and a major extension to Scoil Uí Dhálaigh in Leixlip is nearing completion; a new replacement school is at an early planning stage for Allen national school and extensions are being planned at Hewetson, Kilmead and Rathcoffey national schools; major improvement works are in progress at Ardclough, Sallins, Ballymany and Newbridge and grants for major improvement works are being considered at Scoil Uí Riada, Kilcock, Monasterevan CBS, Ticknevin, Confeey Monasterevan Convent, Naas Convent, Tiermohan and Kilshanroe national schools; numerous minor improvements are carried out on an ongoing basis at various schools throughout the county.
