Vol. 430 No. 5

Written Answers. - Public Water Supply.

Dinny McGinley

Ceist:

155 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the bad quality of the public water supply in the Rosses/ Gweedore areas of County Donegal which is mainly due to an inadequate filtration system at Lough Keel; and if he will allocate funds to expand and upgrade the filtration facilities there.

I am aware from monitoring returns that some problems exist with water in the Rosses Region and that exceedances of quality standards for a number of parameters specified in the European Communities (Quality of Water Intended for Human Consumption) Regulations, 1988, have occurred. Discussions have taken place with Donegal County Council to agree action programmes to improve water quality. In 1992, the Council submitted a proposal for the provision of additional water treatment facilities on the scheme but, having regard to the existing level of commitments under the Water and Sanitary Services Programme, I cannot indicate when a decision may issue in this case. However, a scheme to replace defective mains from Dore to Bunbeg to Derrybeg was completed in 1992 at a cost of £630,000 and this has already improved the pressure and quality of water in the area.
