Vol. 430 No. 7

Written Answers. - Prison Sentences.

Mary Harney

Ceist:

42 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons currently serving sentences for the non-payment of fines or civil debts.

On Wednesday, 12 May, 1993, out of a total of 2,186 persons in custody, 8 persons were in custody on warrants relating to civil debts and 22 persons were in custody on warrants relating to the non-payment of fines imposed by the courts. These persons constitute a fraction over 1 per cent of the prison population on the day in question.

In the majority of these cases the sentences being served are of relatively short duration i.e. less than three months.
