49 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Justice the number of prosecutions there have been in respect of the distribution and possession of video nasties since the introduction of the relevant legislation; and if she will make a statement on the matter.
I assume that the term "video nasties" referred to by the Deputy relates to videos which have been prohibited by the Film Censor under section 7 of the Video Recordings Act, 1989. That section of the Act was brought into operation with effect from 26 July 1991 and I am informed by the Garda authorities that in the period 26 July, 1991 to 22 April, 1993 there have been 35 prosecutions for supplying prohibited videos and 29 prosecutions for possession of prohibited videos for the purpose of supply.
