111 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Education when post-primary schools will be provided with a microcomputer, printer and software package, or software only if computers are already in place, under the Information Technology Plan; if she will furnish a list of those already involved in the plan; and if she will make a statement on the matter.
In late 1992, my Department introduced a computerised school administration system into a number of post-primary schools on a pilot basis.
A combined package, consisting of software and hardware, microcomputer and printer was provided to those piloting schools which had no computer facility capable of running the software; the software package only was provided to some schools which already had a microcomputer which was capable of running the software. The software package supplied supports the pupil administration function.
The pilot project is now being evaluated. The evaluation work will not be completed until the 1993 October returns of the piloting schools have been input to my Department's computer system.
Depending on the success of the pilot project, and as resources permit, it is intended to extend the scheme until all post-primary schools have a computerised school administration facility. The time-scale within which this can be done depends on the funding which can be made available.
