Vol. 430 No. 8

Written Answers. - Treatment of Birthmarks.

Michael Bell

226 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the success of a hospital (details supplied) in the United Kingdom in treating birthmarks; if the treatment in this country is of a similar nature; if the technology and equipment is the same as in the UK unit; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the reports referred to by the Deputy with regard to treatment of Port Wine stain birthmarks. Laser treatment for Port Wine stains is available at St. James's Hospital, Dublin. The laser which is in use in St. James's Hospital was purchased in 1991 at a cost of £165,310. It was, at that stage, state of the art technology, and the surgeons involved have expressed themselves as satisfied with its performance.

I understand, however, that technology in this area has been changing rapidly over the years and that lasers using more modern technology are now available at some centres in the UK.
