Vol. 431 No. 2

Written Answers. - Fishery Harbour Development Programme.

Peadar Clohessy

Ceist:

66 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for the Marine if he will give details of all improvement works under consideration at each of the major fishery harbours; the estimated cost in each case; when the proposed works will be undertaken; and if he will give similar information in relation to other fishery harbours regularly in use.

The Department of the Marine is currently implementing the final year of its Fishery Harbour Development Programme for the period 1989 to 1993. As a part of this programme it is proposed to spend £3.5 million during 1993 on a number of works at the various harbours.

A total of £2.2 million will be spent on the five fishery harbour centres to include works such as: provision of fendering at Killbegs, Castletownbere and Dunmore East; completion of construction of an auction hall at Howth, County Dublin; completion of major development works at Rossaveal and electrical and lighting upgrading works at various harbour centres.

In addition, in the region of £1.3 million will be spent on the commencement of major development works at Union Hall and Kilmore Quay, together with the commencement of a pier extension at Portmagee and dredging of Burtonport harbour. A further £100,000 will be expended on miscellaneous works at other minor harbours.

The Department of the Marine is currently drawing up a new fishery harbour development plan covering the period 1994 to 1997. Pending finalisation of the plan and clarification of its funding, I am not in a position at this stage, to say what works will be undertaken or which harbours will benefit under the new programme.
