The Department of the Marine is currently implementing the final year of its Fishery Harbour Development Programme for the period 1989 to 1993. As a part of this programme it is proposed to spend £3.5 million during 1993 on a number of works at the various harbours.
A total of £2.2 million will be spent on the five fishery harbour centres to include works such as: provision of fendering at Killbegs, Castletownbere and Dunmore East; completion of construction of an auction hall at Howth, County Dublin; completion of major development works at Rossaveal and electrical and lighting upgrading works at various harbour centres.
In addition, in the region of £1.3 million will be spent on the commencement of major development works at Union Hall and Kilmore Quay, together with the commencement of a pier extension at Portmagee and dredging of Burtonport harbour. A further £100,000 will be expended on miscellaneous works at other minor harbours.
The Department of the Marine is currently drawing up a new fishery harbour development plan covering the period 1994 to 1997. Pending finalisation of the plan and clarification of its funding, I am not in a position at this stage, to say what works will be undertaken or which harbours will benefit under the new programme.
