Vol. 431 No. 5

Written Answers. - Medical Card Eligibility.

Rory O'Hanlon

Ceist:

78 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Health if he will ensure that persons investigated by the Department of Social Welfare and found eligible for social assistance will be allocated a medical card without further investigation.

The statutory responsibility for determining eligibility for medical cards rests with the chief executive officers of the health boards. They have established a standing review group which advises them on the appropriate procedures to ensure uniformity, consistency and equity in the assessment of eligibility. I understand that the issue referred to by the Deputy is in fact being examined by the revenue group at present.
